I had followed this story briefly when it first broke. I got sick of it b/c Charles decided to make it one of his “I’m right and am not afraid to beat every dead horse on earth until it comes back to life to prove it” issues. (Charles is one of the biggest babies on the internet, but he keep it real when it comes to intellectual honesty. Just make sure you don’t disagree with him in his comments section).
For all the huffing and puffing though, the story had a very un-climactic ending. Reason however, has a discussion you don’t want to miss.
Slight digression… Reading the post at reason, I got a little bummed out. I’ll openly admit it, I used to be a big Charles Johnson fan. LGF was one of my favorite sites. Then, I made the serious mistake of trying to play it neutral (leaning slightly toward the Robert Spencer side) in the Robert/Charles dispute two times in a row. Sharmuta or whatever that knob polisher’s name is immediately hopped on me and then Führer Charles chimed in. A few seconds later, I joined the company of countless others who dared to have a polite disagreement with Charles on his own site. Even if that incident never happened, Charles seems to be falling apart. Back in his heyday, he was quick to throw big tantrums over ‘physical threats’ or the like whenever anyone made any joke about him being gone. No matter how obvious the joke, he seemed to make a big deal out of it. He was also very quick to point out what evil the KosKids were up to. Other than that though, he was very interesting and funny. Now, LGF seems to be little more than him settling personal scores with people. Even though I agree with him on a lot of it, it gets old quickly. I mean, how many posts about creationism do we need to prove the point? How many posts do we need to close the case on anti-vaccination people being nuts? Or Birthers? Or Truthers? Or… you get the idea.
Then there’s Andrew. Everyone and their brother has a post chronicling his descent into insanity so I won’t. Suffice to say that his descent into madness is reminiscent of reading a Beautiful Mind (a biography about Johnathan Forbes Nash).
Both Charles and Andrew are smart men. Both are great writers. Both are creative and funny. And both were alpha bloggers by any standard I can think of. Sadly, both have fallen from grace so badly they’ve become parodies of themselves. This case is a pretty good illustration of that.
